5 Step Guide – Lasagna Gardening

Step 1

Choose a sunny site and pre-soak the ground. Mark off an area 4′ x 8′ or 4′ x 12′ and cover with overlapping wet cardboard or a thick layer of wet newspaper. This layer will kill grass and weeds.

Build bed up 18″ to 24″ with alternating layers of “Brown and Green” organic materials. Spray each layer with water as you go. Add earth worms, if available.

Plant if last “Frost Date” has passed. Top bed with a few inches of soil/compost mix or place plants in pockets of mix. Plant seeds in mix and keep them moist to sprout.

If early in the season (March-April), cover bed with black plastic and age for 6 weeks or more. Punch holes into cover where water collects. Layers will compost and worms will cultivate and enrich the bed.

Step 5

Lasagna Beds can be made in the Spring or Fall. They require no digging and with care can grow a bountiful harvest. Add new layers each Fall to sustain the bed’s fertility.
